West District Track & Field Championships

Hundreds of athletes enjoyed the West District Championships experience at the Ayrshire Athletics Arena as good weather helped ensure good competition.

There were three district championships taking place on Friday evening and Saturday all day. The North championships at Inverness and the East Championships at Grangemouth. However the Wests in Kilmarnock host the largest number of competitors from the 1600 athletes entering overall.

It is quite a challenge to host an event of this size and would not be possible without the Scottish Athletics Officials, members of Kilmarnock Harriers and the Police Scotland Youth Volunteers, all of whom are volunteers who work tirelessly over the weekend to ensure the smooth running of the event and that athletes have the best competition possible. Lets not forget the hard working staff of the arena for going above and beyond ensuring that the arena is looking great and that everyone attending is safe to enjoy a great weekend of athletics.

There was a lot of local interest as there was a good representation of athletes from Kilmarnock Harriers amongst the competitors. It was great to see some new faces enjoying their first major championships and gaining valuable experience for the future. As is the way with championships there are only ever three medals for any event however that is what leads to good performances in trying to get a medal. As with any competition there are good performances and sometimes not so good. However the athletes understand this and if they did not achieve their potential, they will go away and review their training with their coaches to ensure they get it right next time. So a huge well done to all the athletes who stepped up to the mark and tested their metal against the best athletes in the West. Also lets not forget the coaches and club volunteers who give a huge amount of their time to get them there. A huge well done to all.
