A pleasant late summer evening saw 40 intrepid Harriers take on the delayed individual club handicap – The Valley Dash – a challenging 7.25 kilometre circuit, featuring a combination of road, hill and trail racing.
The hill section of the course pretty much begins from the start, which some runners struggle with, not having the benefit of a chance to warm up. However, this did not worry this years winner James Wales, who out performed the handicappers projection by over 4 minutes. When an embarrassed handicapper mentioned that he must have improved a great deal since the Roon the Toon 10K. A source close to the winner said “he wisny tryin a pun” – presumably with the Valley Dash in mind!
Second home was dad, Kenny, and at one point it was a 1,2,3 for the Wales family. However Alison was caught by the field in the latter stages, saving some organiser’s blushes. Third place eventually went to Stewart McAllister with a spirited performance. You might have beaten the handicapper Stewart but seeing you puking when you crossed the line means you earned it! Great effort.
As per usual, the handicaps caused a great deal of banter, a fair spattering of light-hearted moaning and one or two smirks.
Mister consistent, Russell Duncan, finished nearest his projected time He shares this honour with Hannah O’Shea, with both athletes finishing within 2 seconds of the target. Russell is clearly slipping though, he was only 1 second out last year!
Fastest man on the night was Richard Mair and fastest woman home was Kirsty Alexander.
Thanks to all the volunteers who helped make it a successful night.
