Emirates Stadium Sunday 10 February 2013

A bus travelled from the Ayrshire Athletics Arena on Sunday 10 February with 24 athletes from Kilmarnock Harrier & Athletic Club to compete in the Scottish Indoor Relay Championships at the impressive Emirates Arena in Glasgow.

There were teams in the Under 14 and Under 18 categories and a Under 20/senior mens team.

The athletes were undaunted by the impressive surroundings as they are used to their own impressive facility. The athletes were competing at a level many had never competed at. The Under 14 boys and girls teams leading the way and putting up some very fine performances. The under 18 boys team which had one under 16 athlete in line up produced an excellent run to make the final against some very stiff opposition and continued that form in the final finishing in sixth place in a closely contested battle which could easily have seen them in fourth.

The under 18 Girls team which also had an under 16 athlete in its midst choose a more difficult route to the final. Second leg runner Caitlin White who had a commanding lead coming into the change over stumbled and fell. The outgoing runner Laura Duncan retrieved the baton and continued the race the team qualifying for the final as a fastest loser. In the final there were no mistakes and the team of Lorne Kerr, Caitlin White, Laura Duncan and Anna Balls crossed the line taking the bronze medal by one hundredth of a second taking the scalps of several bigger clubs in the process.

The under 20 men’s team were running well in a hotly contested heat which would in all likelihood have seen them in the final had they not dropped the baton. Even at that they were only just outside the fastest losers positions.

It was a fantastic day and all of the athletes had a great time with lots of smiles on show.
