SVHC ROAD RELAYS 2016

19 HARRIERS AT THE VETS RELAYS

On Sunday morning  (24/1/16), the Scottish Veteran Harriers Road Relays took place at Strathclyde Park and as has been custom in recent years, a number of Kilmarnock athletes took the short trip to represent their Club in the popular team event.

Almost 250 runners took part in the race where each athlete must complete a 3.7 mile circuit of the lake, and in blustery conditions the Ladies fielded 3 athletes per team, with their male counterparts having a 4th runner to complete their quota.

3 ladies teams from Kilmarnock took part and with only a couple of other Clubs having more than this it was an excellent representation. Quickest Harrier on the day was 2nd leg runner Lindsay McMahon, although with a number of the runners within a few seconds of each other, the teams packed well and all can be satisfied with their runs. Dumfries won the Ladies race in a repeat of last year’s success with Garscube in 2nd.

In the Men’s race there were 2 full Kilmarnock Teams, and in a move that suited both Clubs and with the blessing of the organisers, a 3rd team was made up by a couple of Irvine runners (Mark Livingston and Joe MacNamee) to ensure that everyone from both Clubs had a race as part of a complete Team.

In a race dominated to such an extent by winners Cambuslang that the 4 quickest times on the day were all by the Glasgow Club, Kirkintilloch Olympians again took silver.

In the Killie stakes, first leg runner Neil Walker was to be the fastest of his clubmate’s, and with the A Team always in a healthy position in the event, a Top 10 position was the outcome at the end of the race.

Special mentions also go to a number of debutants in the race including Doreen Wales, Chloe Adams and Douglas Dickson.

Full Killie results were –

Ladies A (10th) – Liz McDerment 26.08, Lindsay McMahon 26.06, Rosemary McMillan 29.11

Ladies B (14th) – Doreen Wales 28.40, Rhona O’Neill 28.53, Michelle Goldie 29.12

Ladies C (22nd) – Jackie McCulloch 31.14, Chloe Adams 34.26, Janice Millar 40.27

Mens A (10th) – Neil Walker 20.50, Connell Drummond 21.35, Scott Martin 21.45, Michael Corson 24.37

Mens C (40th) – Mark Livingston (Irvine) 22.33, Alan Anderson 33.08, Douglas Dickson 31.23, Joe McNamee 25.23 (Irvine)

Next up for a couple of athletes is the Scottish Masters Cross Country Champs at Forres on Saturday, while entries are currently being collated for the National Cross Country Championships at Callander Park, Falkirk. Any Harrier wishing to be entered for this must declare their intentions ASAP, and they must have an up to date SAL number.
