SVHC Road Relays 2014

BIG KILLIE TURNOUT FOR VET ROAD RELAYS

In recent years, Kilmarnock Harriers have entered teams for the SVHC Road Relays at Strathclyde Park and on Sunday the Club had another excellent turnout as Captain James and Kara were in a position to field 3 Male and 2 Female teams in a near record turnout for the popular event.

With both sexes having finishes on the podium in recent years, it is an event we usually fare well at and on Sunday, despite missing a few good athletes the Club again fared well. Torrential conditions awaited the near 250 athletes and with each leg consisting a 3,7 mile lap around the lake it was the early leg runners who faced most of the near gale force conditions.

From the ladies side, an overall 13th place was decent and Paula Wilson set the team on their way with her usual good run being ably backed up by Rosemary McMillan and Liz McDerment.

Despite a second string being incomplete due to injuries, Jackie McCulloch (making her Relay debut) and Janice Millar (in prep for a debut Marathon in London in April) expertly braved the elements to bank a good hard race.

In the Men’s team another debutant, cyclist Neil Walker, continues to show he has a talent on two legs as well as two wheels to brave the worst of the conditions and place Killie just outside the Top Ten. With the team being finished off by anchor man Robert Lindsay continuing his improvements, when all was said and done the team had secured a good 10th place finish at National Level.

A second string also completed a top 30 placing while in an impressive turn out, a complete 3rd team was also fielded thanks to late call up by Alan “Panda” Anderson who thoroughly enjoyed his day and is looking forward to the next such event.
