Steve Cram at Killie Harriers

On 7^th March, former world champion and world record holder Steve Cram visited the Ayrshire Athletics Arena, home of Kilmarnock Harrier & Athletic Club.

Steve was able to tour the facility and meet many of the training groups and club volunteers before 15 of the clubs members each ran 100m in a relay challenge in an attempt to take on Steve’s 1500m world record, of 3.29 set in 1985. A fantastic effort saw them safely get the baton round in 3.12 – but it was 15 compared to 1!  

A short video of Steve’s world records (remarkably, he broke the world records for 1500m, 2000m and the mile in a period of 19 days in 1985) was followed by a motivating and encouraging talk. A Q&A session saw some great questions from club members from which we learned:

• He started running because he wanted to win medals and prizes – little did he expect his first prize (as an 11 year old) to be a pair of cufflinks.
• It’s good to be nervous before a race, but use the nerves positively.
• It’s difficult to remain neutral when commentating and British athletes are doing well. (And he’d rather be running.)
• He was training 90-120 miles a week at his peak –seems huge for a middle distance runner.
• Cross Country is an important feature of training, so start thinking about next winter’s XC season.

As Steve left he was faced with a scrum of autograph and photo hunters but he generously gave his time and no-one left unsatisfied.

This was a great event which we hope has “inspired a generation”.

Steve was visiting Kilmarnock Harriers in his role as an ambassador for Clydesdale Bank which involves him giving motivational talks, increasing the awareness of sport and supporting charities.  £210 was raised from registration fees and donations on the night, donated to  Help the Hospices and Children 1^st.
