Senior/U20 Events Report 24 th May

The weather has certainly been kinder for MOST of the last few weeks (we won’t talk about
Land O’Burns) and our athletes have been a very busy bunch at events up and down the
country. I hope I’ve captured everything since the last report on the 2 nd of May, but if I’ve
missed you out PLEASE let me know and I’ll add you into the next report!

We start this week’s report over in Edinburgh, where 6 Harriers competed in the Sri Chinmoy
5k incorporating the Scottish 5k Championships. This race is known as ‘the fast one’ for a
reason, and our athletes certainly did not disappoint! Jamie Work was first home in a
cracking PB of 15:55, followed by fellow young athlete Matthew Monachello also running a
PB of 16:39. First lady home was Laura Haggarty in 18:01, closely followed by Lynsey
O’Connor in a huge PB of 18:06. Lynsey was also 2 nd V40 lady so claimed herself a Scottish
Championship medal! Lorna Baird rounded up our speedy trio of ladies in a fine 18:25, and
Murray McDonald also claimed a PB of 19:49 on the night – great running everyone.
On the same weekend, Isla Raeburn was representing her university at the BUCS Outdoor
Championships at Manchester. She had a solid weekend of performances with a 13.47(w)
in the 100m, a 1.45m clearance in the high jump, a 4.87m jump in the long jump, a 9.79m
throw in the shot and a 30.38m throw in the javelin – a seriously busy weekend Isla, well
done for a set of solid performances. Sara Barbour was also in attendance at this event
with a PB clearance of 3.84m in the pole vault – well done Sara!

Closer to home a number of our track and field athletes were at Grangemouth for the second
SNAL meet of the season. First out we had Izzy Caufield who took maximum U20 points in
the 3000m with a time of 12:25.66. Jennifer Beattie was representing in the 400m and had
to settle for 68.29 this time around. The men had better fortune in the 400, with Jamie
Phillips topping heat 2 in 49.87 (PB) and Nathan Smith also posting a PB of 53.96 in heat 3.
In the 1500m Jamie Nix made a comeback to track with a 4:46.71 and Izzy Caufield posted

to take maximum points in this event. In the pole vault, Matthew Monachello took maximum
points with a 2.8m vault and in the high jump Laura Mitchell cleared 1.50m, finishing 2 nd on
countback. Well done to all our U17 athletes who also competed – looking forward to you all
moving up to the U20 and Senior ranks!

The 5 th of May also saw a number of our road runners out and about doing the club proud.

back in 75 th was Richard Beattie (44:37) and then Jackie Duncan in 77 th (44:49) – great
running team!

On Tuesday the 7 th we had a couple of U20/senior athletes at the Linwood OG. Matthew
Monachello was 3 rd in his 1500m in a PB time of 4:14.00. Also representing Kilmarnock was
Mark Alexander who made his 1500m debut finishing 2 nd in his heat in 5:02.20 – great
running guys.

Wednesday the 8 th was an exciting night at the AAA, with 44 athletes from the various
training groups and the KH Jog Squad getting together to take part in a fun race in and
around the arena. We saw some fantastic performances and awarded prizes for the best
effort on the hill (Fiona Thomson) and the best sprint finish (Sasha I’Anson) as well as those

who really made the club look like a fun place to be (Emily Green and Scott Fitzgerald), and
our overall winners on the night were Graeme Quinn and Kat Kelly (full results available on
the Harriers Facebook page). It was great to see everyone having fun and mixing up the
groups, watch this space for more events like this in the future.

Also on the 8 th , we had a team of runners take on the Dumyat Hill Race. Mark Henderson
was first home in 139 th (50:51) with Roddy Pugh next back in 169 th (53:26). Eilidh Ballantyne
was 177 th (53:58) – well done all!

The weekend of the 11 th and the 12 th saw our younger athletes competing for medals at the
West District Championships – unfortunately our U20s and Seniors do not get the
opportunity for medals at this event but there were open events in which a number of our
athletes had some great performances. At Grangemouth, Brooke Dunlop was 4 th in the
100m hurdles (17.49s). Adam Todd was 3 rd in his 100m heat (12.79s) and ran 12.71 in the

Hannah Burn ran a cracking PB of 58.01s in some very good company for 5 th , Jordan Phillips

Smith also had a solid run in his heat for a time of 54.27s. In the 200m, Douglas Dickson

was 7 th in the 1500 with 4:14.00.

Also on the 11 th , hill running legend Roddy Pugh took on the Ben Lomond race, finishing in
58 th place in 1:56:27 and 2 nd V60 – well done Roddy!

The weekend just gone saw our athletes representing the club at a number of events
including some very high profile ones! Sara Barbour was representing at the Loughborough
International match, and Jamie Phillips was invited to run in the U20 800m race at the Night
of the 10,000m PBs meeting at Parliament Hill in London. For anyone who has not seen
any footage of this event it is definitely worth a watch and Jamie’s race has been posted on
the club Facebook page. Jamie most definitely did the club proud on the night, running a
really gutsy race to finish 3 rd in a new PB of 1:50.40 – huge congratulations to Jamie and his
coaches. A bit closer to home, Adam Todd was at the University of Stirling OG where he
posted a 12.6s run in the 100m and a 25.64s in the 200m (PB). Mark Henderson was again
running up big hills – this weekend at the Keswick Mountain Festival for the Skiddaw race.
Mark finished in 56 th place in 2:34:19 – well done Mark!

To say the weather took a turn for the worse just in time for the Land O’Burns 10k would
perhaps be an understatement – I don’t think I have EVER seen a more soggy looking
bunch in race photos! However the rubbish weather did not stop the Harriers from
absolutely dominating this Ayrshire 10k championship race. First across the line and
Ayrshire men’s 10k champion was Jonathon Downey (32:50) with Sam Rice finishing 4 th
overall and 2 nd U20 in 35:04. Matthew Monachello rounded up the top 3 U20s finishing in
36:12. Next man home and 1 st V40 was David Sherrington in a new PB of 35:07. For the
ladies, our Ayrshire champion is Kat Kelly who was 16 th overall and 1 st lady/1 st V40 in 39:20.
Izzy Caufield was 1 st U20 lady in 42:32 and Sasha I’Anson was 2 nd U20 in 42:51 – I believe
these both to be PBs for these ladies so huge well done! Lynsey Jamieson topped the
senior ladies category in 45:19. Russell Duncan was 1 st V60 man in 47:27 and Susan Boyd
was 2 nd V60 lady in 55:05. Also competing were Ross Granger (38:13), Robin Bourne
(52:19), Richard Beattie (55:49), Sal Monachello (1:02:40) and Stuart Nibloe (1:04:19). I

have not seen the Ayrshire champs results as of yet but I would imagine that we must have
won the team prizes too – fabulous night of racing for our team!

From a summer league perspective, Izzy Caufield currently tops the ladies table with 36
points and equal second are Amy Mitchell and Susan Boyd with 26 apiece. Lynsey
Jamieson is snapping at their heels with 25 – all to play for! For the men, Sam Rice retains
his spot at the top of the table with 44, Ross Granger is in second with 36 and Matthew
Monachello is third with 25. The next race for points is the Helensburgh 10k on the 30 th of
May and there are still a few races left to count – get your entries in! See the full table here –
