Senior/U20 Event Report 30th July 2024

It finally feels like summer has landed, with some nice sunny race days to report on this
week! We start this week with Girvan Half marathon, held on Sunday the 14 th of July. We
had two Harriers on the start list for this tricky course, with Scott Masterton finishing in 7 th
overall in 1:20:29 and Andy Taylor in 86 th in 2:05:31 – well done both!

On the 19th of July, Jamie Phillips was competing at the English U20 Championships at
Birmingham, taking the top qualifying spot in his 800m heat (1:52.17) and backing that up
with the silver medal in the final on the 20 th (1:50.31). Also in action at this prestigious
event, Logan Mitchell threw a solid 13.75m in the shot to finish 4 th on the Saturday, and then
returned a massive 52.02m in the hammer on the Sunday to finish 5 th overall. An 8 th place
finish in the discus (43.17m) rounded up a really solid weekend of throwing for this talented
young athlete.

This weekend also saw the ever popular Run the Blades events taking place at Whitelees
Wind Farm. The 10k on the Friday night saw an overall win for the in-form Scott Masterton
(37:12). Next home in 6 th overall and 1 st U18 was Matthew Monachello (39:11), followed by
first lady back Amy Alexander (59:41). Kate Todd was 3 rd FV60+ (59:59) and also
completing this race were Louise Baillie (1:01:24), Stuart McWaters (1:02:53) and Sal
Monachello (1:08:37) – great running from all on a difficult course! On the Saturday, the 50k
Ultra marathon was the event of the day with 3 Harriers on the start list. First back on his
Ultra debut was Graeme Quinn (3:58:28) in 5 th place overall, followed by Steven Robson in
40 th overall (9 th V40) in 4:59:13. Rounding up the results was Ken Monaghan who completed
in 6:07:51 in 116 th overall and 9 th V50. Well done to all runners in what were challenging
conditions!

The 21 st also saw the Ayrshire Track and Field Championships held at the AAA. We had an
incredible turnout of athletes across the age groups as well as our usual amazing team of
officials and volunteers – thank you to all of you! For the U20 and senior athletes there were
plenty of medals and strong performances across the board. In the 100m, Adam Todd was
top senior man in 13.10s, and Alistair Craig was 1 st V40 in 13.75s. Adam also took top
senior in the 200m (25.40s). In the 400m, Hannah Burn was top senior lady in 59.50s, with
Laura Haggarty 1 st V40 in a season best 62.27 and Jennifer Beattie 2 nd V40 in 68.52. In the
800m, Laura Haggarty had a fantastic run from the front to earn a very well deserved PB of
2:19.33 and the gold medal, with Jennifer in 3 rd overall and 2 nd V40 in 2:36.56. In the
1500m, Matthew Monachello was 1 st overall and 1 st U20 in 4:24.18, with senior Owen
Walpole 2 nd in 4:26.56. He was closely followed by Conor Scobie who ran a SB of 4:27.17.
In the field events, Brooke Dunlop had a fabulous long jump PB of 5.41m to take the win,
with Alistair Craig also earning a PB of 5.13m to take the men’s gold. Alistair also finished
first V40 in the javelin with a PB of 24.95m, and for the ladies javelin Brooke Dunlop was
once again victorious with a 27.14m throw. Well done all!

Wednesday the 24 th saw Jamie Phillips in BMC action once again at the Bury Gold Standard
meet. This was an extra special result, as 2 nd place in the 800m A race in a time of 1:47.46
not only gave Jamie a PB and the time he has been working so hard to achieve, but also
broke the Scottish U20 800m record which has stood for an incredible 45 years – what a
fantastic result which is a real testament to the hard work put in. Congratulations Jamie and
your coaching and support team – Kilmarnock Harriers are so proud of you!
Friday the 26 th saw the next GAA Miler Meet take place at Crownpoint in good racing
conditions. In the 1500m, the in-form Laura Haggarty continued her build up to the World
Masters Championships in Sweden in a few weeks with a PB of 4:42.89 to finish 5 th in her

race. Also in action was Laura Jedrusiak who was 4 th in her race in 5:03.94. Well done
ladies, great racing!

This weekend also saw the British Masters Championships held in Derby, with Jennifer
Beattie taking part on Saturday and Sunday. In the 400m, a 67.05s run was good enough to
take the V40 silver medal, and in the 800m she finished in 5 th place in 2:37.28.
Sunday the 28 th also saw the final match of the Scottish National Athletics League in
Aberdeen. In a busy weekend of competition and the added logistical issues we were
always going to struggle to field a big team, but the athletes that did make it put in some
fantastic performances. Logan Mitchell was 2 nd overall and top U20 gaining maximum points
in the discus with a 43.71m throw, and also 2 nd overall and top U20 in the shot with 13.61m
and another maximum 20 points. Finishing off the day was an outright win for Logan in the
hammer with a huge 54.54m. On the track, Eve Starritt was our only athlete and she had a
fantastic run in the 800m to win her heat in 2:27.46 to be 4 th U17 overall. She then went
straight into the 300m to run a very credible 49.10s for 3 rd in her heat. Well done to both of
these athletes – lots of points gained!

Our final race for this report takes us over to Cumbrae for the Kenny Phillips Memorial 10
mile race in conjunction with the Ayrshire 10 mile championships. 7 Harriers braved the
fierce sunshine on the Clyde, with some great results! Scott Masterton was 12 th overall in
1:01:34, with David Anderson next back in 65 th (8 th V50) in 1:11:59. Nick Carter was 91st in
1:15:25 and Gary Martin was 161st in 1:22:29. Richard Beattie was next Harrier home in
198 th (1:26:29), with Susan Boyd first lady back as 78 th lady in 1:36:07 and 1 st V70 overall.
Lauren Little rounded up the results nicely with a 1:42:04 run (101 st lady overall). In the
Ayrshire Championships Scott Masterton picked up 3 rd male overall, Richard Beattie was 1 st
V70 and Susan Boyd was 1 st FV70. The men’s team of Scott, David, Nick and Gary also
finished 2 nd in the men’s teams – medals will follow in due course, well done all!
Following this race we now have an update to the league tables. In the ladies, Izzy Caufield
retains her lead at the top of the table (51 points) but Susan Boyd now moves up to 2 nd with
41 points, and Lauren Little takes 3 rd with 28. For the men, Sam Rice retains the lead at the
top of the table with 44, Ross Granger is 2 nd with 36 and Scott Masterton now moves up to 3 rd
with 27. With the Scottish 10k champs at Stirling and best HM and Marathon time still to be
added there is still plenty to play for in both tables – Summer 2024 tables

In the coming weeks we will have the ever popular Kilmaurs 5k, and we will shortly be
looking for names for the CSSAL League final on the 25 th of August. Keep an eye out on
club socials for news about the Rose Bowl relay and save the date for Club Champs (8 th of
September) and the Valley Dash which is still date TBC. We are also hoping to do another
XC trial race at the Kay Park after the success of last year’s event – this will likely be late
September.
