Senior/U20 Event Report 23 rd August 2024

It’s hard to believe that we’re now getting towards the end of August – National
Championships in Track and Field have concluded, autumn marathons are coming up fast
and XC season is well and truly on the horizon!

Since our last report our athletes have been out and about doing the club proud at various
events across the disciplines, and as usual there is a lot of good news to report.

We will start this week with the ever-popular Kilmaurs 5k held on Wednesday the 31 st of July.
As always, this event draws a lot of entrants from some of the bigger Glasgow clubs but we
well and truly held our own with 25 Harriers and KH Jog Squadders completing the course.
First Harrier home in 3 rd overall was Jonathon Downey in a
time of 15:53, followed by Jamie Work in 4 th (1 st 15-17) in 16:33 and Scott Masterton in 6 th
(16:43, PB). Along with Ross Granger in 18 th (17:59) the men also took the men’s team
prize on the night – well done boys! For the ladies, first home was Lynsey Jamieson in
22:00 (20 th lady overall), followed by Eilidh Ballantyne in 22:07 and Jennie Munro in 23:40
(2 nd 15-17). Taking other age group top 3 finishes, Nicholas Latto was 3 rd 15-17 male, Mike
Corson was first MV60, Charlotte Gebbie was 3 rd 15-17 girl, Susan Boyd was 1 st FV70 and
Kate Todd was 2 nd FV70. Great running everyone!

Also on the 31 st was the Dundonald Games 10k, where we had 5 Harriers take on the tricky
course in the hills around Dundonald. 1 st Harrier home, 1 st U20 and 3 rd lady overall was
Sasha I’Anson in a time of 43:17, followed by Lucy Stanley in 49:16 (7 th lady overall) and
Natalie Sharp (1:03:57). First man home was Ronnie McCormick in 1:11:15 (4 th V70) and
then Stuart Nibloe in 1:14:05.

On Friday the 2 nd of August, Matthew Monachello was representing the U20s at the
Livingston Open Graded where he was 8 th in his 800m race in a time of 2:00.75.
On the 3 rd of August, Robin Bourne took on the Dunoon 10k where he finished in 77 th overall
in a time of 52:46 – well done Robin!

Also on the 3 rd we had Harriers in action at the GAA Sprint Gala at Crownpoint. Matthew
Monachello was 4 th in his 400m race in 53.91 and Jordan Phillips was 5 th in his race in 50.91.
The rescheduled Scottish Schools hammer throw was also held at this event, and U20
athlete Logan Mitchell took the gold with a season best of 49.21m.

This weekend also saw our very own Hannah Burn representing Glasgow Jaguars at the
National Athletics Premier League in Birmingham where she was 5 th in the 400m (58.84) and
also ran in the 4x400m team who finished 4 th .

The weekend of the 10 th and 11 th of August saw some of our U20 athletes in action at the 4J
Scottish Athletics National Age group championships. In the 800m, Jordan Phillips was 2 nd
in his heat and qualified in 2:01.07 and Matthew Monachello narrowly missed out being 4 th in
the same heat in 2:02.83. In the final, Jordan finished 6 th in 1:54.96. In the U20 javelin,
Brooke Dunlop took the bronze medal with a throw of 31.95m. Laura Mitchell was 7 th in the
U20 high jump with 1.42m. Matthew Monachello was in action again in the 1500m, finishing
in 10 th pace in 4:13.99 in his heat. In the other heat, Connor Scobie was 13 th in 4:19.03. In
the U20 women’s 100m hurdles, Brooke picked up another medal – this time a silver for a
performance of 16.09s. Brooke was also 4 th in the long jump on the same day with a jump of
5.13m. In the hammer, Logan Mitchell threw a massive 57.67m to take the gold medal, and
he also took the gold in the shot (13.93m). He then rounded up a very successful weekend

with a gold medal in the discus (44.70m). Well done to all who took part and huge
congratulations to our medallists!

On the 11 th of August, Amanda Bryden took part in ‘The Drop’ race in Glasgow. This is a
really interesting concept – you get put on a bus and blindfolded, dropped your chosen
distance (10 or 15 mile options as the crow flies) and have to navigate your way back to the
start with no technology available! Amanda obviously has a reasonable sense of direction
(only taking 16 miles to get back to the start) and was the overall winner and 1 st lady in a
time of 2:27:44 – well done Amanda!

Also on the 11 th , Jonathon Downey took part in the Cademuir Rollercoaster hill race, finishing
in 21 st place. Also in the hills, on the 14 th of August Mark Henderson competed in the
Caerketton Hill Race, finishing in 74 th overall.

The following weekend it was the turn of our senior athletes to shine at the Eric Liddell
Scottish Athletics U17 and Senior Championships. Ally Mitchell was 3 rd in his 400m heat in
51.52, earning him a Q for the semi finals later in the day. In the semi-final he ran 51.23
which was enough to earn a place in the final on the Sunday. In this 400m final, he finished
7 th in excellent company and in windy conditions in 52.04 – all in a great way to finish his 1 st
season of 400m racing! In the senior women’s 5000m, Steph Hewitt took the bronze medal
in a fantastic 17:24.56 – well done Steph! In the discus, Logan Mitchell was in action in
senior company, finishing a fine 5 th with 39.21m. He then backed this up with 4 th in the
hammer (46.26m). In the senior women’s 1500m, Laura Jedrusiak was 12 th in 4:57.53.
Great results from all our athletes!

Sunday the 18 th saw our road runners at a couple of different events. Colin Anderson was at
the Forth Road Bridge 10k where he finished 37 th in 44:20, whilst we had 4 Harriers in action
at the Paisley 10k. First back was David McLure in 39 th overall (35:54), followed by Tom
Flood (36:12), Brian McLure (51:29) and Susan Boyd (55:05). Over on the east coast, we
had two Harriers in the Scottish Half Marathon. David Sherrington was 23 rd overall in
1:18:41 and Louise Baillie completed the course in 1:51:57-well done both. We also had
veteran hill runner Roddie Pugh in action, completing the Lomonds of Fife Hill race in a very
commendable 40 th place (3 rd M60).

Wednesday the 21 st saw some rather autumnal conditions for the Jim Young Marymass 10k.
It seems the lure of the free ice cream was enough though as we had 19 hardy Harriers
brave the wind and the rain (full results here). First home and 3 rd overall was David
Sherrington (35:48), followed in by Graeme Quinn (36:00) and David Anderson (41:09).
Along with a great effort from Colin Anderson (41:43) this was enough to secure the men’s
team prize. For the ladies, first back was Kirsty Girvan (45:24) followed by Sophie Granger
(45:44) and Lynsey Jamieson (45:59). Also securing top 3 age group results were Mike
Corson (1 st V60), Susan Boyd (1 st FV70) and Alison Mair (3 rd FV60). Well done to all who
took part and hopefully your shoes have dried out!

Going forward we have a busy few weeks ahead, with athletes taking part in the final CSSAL
league match this weekend and hoping to secure the league win this year! North Ayrshire
10k is coming up, as is our annual Club Championships – we will be looking for names for
this soon! We are also planning to set a date for the Valley Dash in the next few weeks and
intend to have another XC trials night after the success of the event at the Kay Park last year
– watch this space!
