Senior/U20 Event Report 17th July 2024

We are now deep into the outdoor season, with our track athletes preparing for (and in some
cases competing already) in their Championship events and our road and hill runners
popping up at various events both at home and abroad. Indeed, we start this week’s report
with a glaring omission from the last update – how could we possibly miss our very own
Gary Martin competing in the Metropol 10k in Nuremberg in his kilt whilst out supporting the
Tartan Army? A great effort from Gary to complete in hot conditions in 48:22 – well done
Gary!

Saturday the 29 th of June saw Jamie Phillips continue his fantastic season at the Microplus
UK Athletics Championships which also served as the GB Olympic trials on this occasion.
Despite narrowly missing a pile up in the first lap, Jamie was able to keep out of trouble in
heat 3 to finish 4 th in 1:49.44, missing out on a place in the final by the smallest of margins.
It is great to see the club represented at this level – well done Jamie.

Also on the 29 th , hill running stalwart Roddy Pugh competed in the Arrochar Alps race,
completing the brutal course in 6:31:40 – huge congratulations Roddy!

On Sunday the 30 th of June a squad of athletes travelled to Grangemouth to compete in the
third Scottish National Athletics League match of the season. As a relatively small fish in a
big pond, it is safe to say that our first season back in this league has been a successful one
and we are currently only sitting behind the big hitters Aberdeen AAC, Edinburgh AC and VP
Glasgow in the league table with one match left on the 28 th of July. On the track, we had two
senior/U20 men gaining points in the 800m – Matthew Monachello (U20) really solidifying his
form as a sub 2 800m runner to finish 6 th in heat 2 (1:59.87) and Jamie Nix finishing 8 th in
heat 4 (2:17.34). For the ladies, Izzy Caufield (U20) was 6 th in heat 4 in 2:46.71. Moving
onto the sprints, Ally Mitchell was 8 th in heat 1 of the 100m with an 11.34s run, and Adam
Todd was 5 th in heat 8 in 12.35s. in the second set of runs, Adam Todd was 5 th in heat 3 in
12.35 again for more points. In the women’s 1500 Laura Haggarty was 5 th in heat 1 in a PB
of 4:43.90, Laura Jedrusiak took the win in heat 2 with a PB performance of 4:56.81 and Izzy
Caufield was 8 th in heat 2 in 5:49.86. For the men, Jonathon Downey was 3 rd in heat 1
(4:01.68) and Jamie Nix was 11 th in heat 2 (4:49.56). In the 400m, Ally Mitchell ran a PB of
50.99 to finish 5 th in heat 1. Moving onto the field events, Logan Mitchell (U20) dominated
the shot put with a 14.08m throw and then also took the win in the hammer with 52.36m.
Well done also to all of our U17 athletes for some great performances!

Also on this weekend, multi eventer Brooke Dunlop was invited to compete at the World
Combined Events Tour Silver League meeting at Hexham for the Heptathon. A solid set of
performances saw her take 3 rd place U20 athlete – well done Brooke, we hope you enjoyed
the experience.

On the 6 th of July, Jamie Phillips was in action again at the BMC Grand Prix in Birmingham,
where he finished 8 th in the men’s A race 800m in 1:48.68. Brother Jordan was 5 th in the D
race with a 1:52.97 – well done lads!

On the 7 th of July we had two Harriers don the Glasgow Jaguars colours to compete in round
2 of the National Athletics League Premiership. Logan Mitchell was top U20 on the day and
11 th overall with 43.92m in the hammer and Sara Barbour was 2 nd in the pole vault with a
season best of 3.92m.

Also on the 7 th , Mark Henderson took on the Skiddaw Fell race at Keswick – no official
results as yet, but great effort Mark!

Mark was in action again on the 10 th , competing in the Maddy Moss hill race alongside
Roddy Pugh. Roddy finished in 50 th overall in 1:22:43 and Mark was 54 th in 1:24:23.
The weekend just gone saw the 2024 4J Studios Combined Events, Masters Championships
and Open Events take place in Dundee, and we had good representation and a LOT of
medals claimed! For the Masters athletes on the track, Laura Haggarty claimed double V40
golds and two new Championship Best Performance records in the 800m (2:20.49) and
1500m (4:47.82). Douglas Dickson and Alistair Craig were both in sprint action in the 100m,
with Douglas running 13.94 and Alistair taking the V40 silver in 13.22s. Douglas then
followed this up with a SB in the 200m (28.68). Jennifer Beattie took the silver in the V40
400m in 66.68s. For the field events Alex McIntosh was in fine form, claiming V65 gold in
the hammer (33.93m), gold in the javelin (27.35m), gold in the discus (28.97m) and gold in
the shot (9.65m) – fabulous results Alex! Also competing in the field at his first Masters
championships, Alistair Craig took gold in the long jump (4.98m), gold in the javelin (22.98m)
and silver in the shot (7.85m).

In the U20 Heptathlon held across both days, Brooke Dunlop produced a season’s best
performance across the seven events including a big long jump PB to take the U20 gold
medal – well done Brooke!
