Senior Road Running Championships

The final race of the Summer Road racing championships took place yesterday on the Isle of Cumbrae, as runners tackled the 10 mile circuit of the island from Millport back to Millport, in an anti clockwise loop. As usual a large amount of Kilmarnock Harriers attended on what proved to be a blustery day, with wind and rain proving especially problematic on the way back down the West side of the island.

In the men’s race Mark Alexander took the full 15 points, timing his championship run in to perfection to move to the top for the first time this season, at the end of the final race. John Tougher took the 14 points ahead of Scott Lyden (13) as the main championship contenders battled it out.

The women’s race saw an excellent run from Kirsty Alexander to take the 15 points for the 2nd time this season. With the top 3 in the championship Amanda Bryden, Lynne McCaffrey and Jacqui Sandler failing to improve on their points total, having had 7 better scoring races throughout the season, the top of the Championship remains the same with Amanda in 1st position. Amanda has to be massively congratulated for being the only athlete this year to complete all of the championship races.

Whilst we cannot officially announce the champions at this stage with the marathon season still to be completed, with the remaining marathons only likely to affect the minor places in the championships (unless someone has a surprise up their sleeve), Mark and Amanda look to have unassailable leads, so well done to both.

To round off, it has been a great season of road racing with 76 members registering at least some kind of points in this years championship. Massive well done to everyone and we look forward to seeing you soon for the Winter championships, the races for which will be announced soon.

If you are interested in doing any of the relays this year please contact myself or Paula. We are registering interest now for the following races:
