Senior Event Round Up 4 th October 2023

The lights are on at the track at night and we’re all dusting off the long-sleeved tops and hi-viz
clothes – how on earth did we get to October already? It has been another couple of busy weeks
with the road season starting to draw to a close, and yet again our Harriers have been making their
mark at a number of events both here and abroad.

On Sunday the 24 th of September we had two harriers take on the Scottish Half Marathon at
Musselburgh. First across the line was Bernice Amos in 2:01:38, followed by Stewart McRoberts in
2:06:21. Also venturing across towards the east was Colin Anderson who was competing at the
Linlithgow 10k. Colin had a strong race to finish 38 th overall in 40:39 – well done!
A little bit further afield, Lorna Baird was away celebrating a significant birthday. Most people have
a party or go away a nice trip, but Lorna decided that the best way to enjoy her new age group
status was to run the Berlin marathon. All of the hard work over the summer definitely paid off with
a PB and another sub 3 hour marathon under her belt (2:57:13) which takes the club ladies’ record
down even further. Lorna finished an incredible 193 rd overall and 79 th lady in a massive field, well
done Lorna!

On the 26 th we held a club time trial in preparation for the XC relays. This has been reported on
already, but it was great to see 39 athletes from across the club coming together to race. We are
hoping to hold more of these in the future – watch this space.

The weekend just gone was the ever-popular Great Scottish Run event, with a large number of our
members competing in both the 10k and Half Marathon races. In the 10k we had a total of 16
athletes put their toe on the line, and first across the line was Martin Brown in 33:22 (8 th overall).
U20 athlete Sam Rice was next in 13th overall (34:07) and making up our top 3 men was U17 athlete
Matthew Monachello who was 80 th overall in 38:17. For the ladies, Amanda Bryden was first back in
44:16, followed by Sasha I’Anson in 45:00 and Izzy Caufield in 49:10. Also completing on the day
were Adam Todd (38:54), Colin Anderson (40:14), Scott Lyden (46:26), Mark Lyden (52:10), Brian
McLure (53:00), Robin Bourne (54:35), Susan Boyd (56:39), Christopher Chance (56:50), Hannah
Connell (1:03:32), Sal Monachello (1:03:32), Kirstyn Park (1:13:41) and Heather Morton (1:18:54).
The half marathon saw 26 Harriers collect their medal down on Glasgow Green, with Craig Ferguson
first back in blue and white in 18 th overall (1:12:10), followed by Graeme Quinn in 112 th (1:19:53) and
Scott Masterton in 165 th (1:22:37). For the ladies, first home was Bethany Ross in 1:44:08, followed
by Louise Baillie (1:51:32) and Lynne McCaffrey (1:55:33). Also completing were Josh Raeburn
(1:24:07), Owen Walpole (1:24:28). Brian O’Connor (1:26:49), John Tougher (1:34:17), Steven
Robson (1:36:46), Paul Black (1:38:07), Mark Henderson (1:40:24), Steven Vass (1:54:42) Lynn Brown
(1:55:46), Stewart McRoberts (1:55:58), Jamie Cooper (1:56:03), Rhona O’Neill (1:59:11), Douglas
Steele (2:01:01), Stuart McWaters (2:02:07), Victoria Deane (2:04:36), Brian Darroch (2:04:54),
Kieran McCann (2:05:17), Thomas Samson (2:06:59), Sarah Rowan (2:08:15) and Catriona Hastings
(2:27:42). Ross Granger was on for a cracker but unfortunately took a tumble in the closing stages –
hope you feel better Ross!

It looked like a great day was had by all, and we are aware of a few PBs on the day (Matthew
Monachello, Sal Monachello, Brian O’Connor and Jamie Cooper – apologies for anyone I’ve missed!).
With entries now closed for the National XC relays we are looking for names for the Ayrshire XC
relays on Sunday the 15 th of October. This is a low key event and you do not have to be an SA
member – the only requirement is a club vest (see Suzanne Sharp or speak to one of your captains).

The details for the winter league will be published shortly, rest assured that all of the XC events will
be on there and this is a great one to start out with. You also still have time to submit your best
marathon, half marathon or Parkrun times for the summer league – I have not had many names in
yet but hoping for an influx after Sunday!
