Scottish Masters Cross Country Trials

September seems a little early for Cross Country racing, particularly when it is 20 degrees and sunny!  The reason for the early race was a trial for the Scottish Team for the Home International XC in November, which this year will be at Tollcross Park in Glasgow.  4 Kilmarnock Harriers took to the start of the 35-60 race, held on an unrelenting 2km grass course, 4 laps with barely a piece of flat ground to be found, and just enough moisture in the ground to sap your energy and speed.

After leading for 2 laps, Richard Mair was just bested by Grant Baillie of East Kilbride to the overall win, securing Scotland Selection in his first season of club running (top 3 in each category are guaranteed selection) in a time of 27.06 for the 5 miles.  Also in the V35 category, Neil Walker placed 26th overall, and 10th in category (29.16).  Connell Drummond has obviously recovered from his recent Marathon exploits, running a consistent race to finish 34th overall and 12th in the 40-44 age group (29.47), whilst Gordon Reid had a great start, but despite recent good form had an off day and finished 40th overall and 14th in the 40-44 age group (30.13).

The International will be held at Tollcross Park on Saturday 12th November.  Best of luck to Richard on his Scotland debut!

Last chance to let Neil or Paula know if you want to run the West District XC Relays, as entries need to be sent this week, and confirmations are needed for next Saturdays George Cummings Relay, Ayrshire XC Relay and Scottish XC Relay.
