Masters Road Relays 2012

Kilmarnock Harrier - News & Events

MASTER ATHLETES TURN OUT IN FORCE.

A massively impressive turnout of 18 Kilmarnock Harriers joined a number of the Country’s finest athletes aged 35 and over for the popular and annual Scottish Veteran Harriers Road Relays on Sunday 27th January.

Held as ever at Strathclyde Country Park, each runner completed one full circuit of the lake consisting of 3.7 miles. 3 Men’s teams of 4 runners and 2 full ladies teams of 3 per team lined up in the blue and white vests. Particularly pleasing was the number of new runner’s competing for their Club including Louise Hamilton, Janice Millar and Robert Lindsay with all faring well.

Conditions were very windy for the 11am start, however the previous few days snow, rain and icy conditions stayed at bay for the duration of the race.

Killie’s A Team were led off by Colin Glencorse, who despite feeling a bit under the weather hung on well to keep his team in the hunt. Scott Martin picked up a few places while penultimate runner Stewart Ferguson consolidated a position well inside the top 10 as anchor man Keith Haining took over.

Running a stormer, Keith improved Kilmarnock’s 7th position to enter the closing phase marginally off a medal position. As the line approached the Shortlees man timed his run to perfection to equal the Team’s 3rd place of 2010, an excellent performance at National level.

All other Killie performance’s were high, and the B  string showed the strength in depth by finishing top “B” team on the day while an impressive third team also ran well.

Paula Wilson completed her first race in a while to lead off the ladies and despite not being at her fittest got a very good run under her belt in very tough conditions.

Rosemary McMillan and Liz McDerment completed a high placing for the Club.

Definitely not least however was the inexperienced trio who ran for the Ladies B String.

Banishing nerves to one side, Louise Hamilton passed to Pamela Gray who in turn handed to the newest Member Janice Millar to complete a great day for everyone.

Full times and conditions were –

Mens A (3rd) – Colin Glencorse 21.54, Scott Martin 20.48, Stewart Ferguson 22.03, Keith Haining 20.25
