Well it was day two at Grangemouth for sprints coaches Colin Young and Donald McIntosh. This time it was for the Senior National Relay Championships. There were two teams entered in the Under 20/Senior Men’s 4x400meters and 4x100meters events. It was unfortunate that the Kilmarnock Senior Women who were the reigning 4x100meters relay national champions were unable to attend due to various other commitments and injury.

First up was the 4x400m team with Kuda Tapatapa leading off. He had a tremendous battle after breaking lanes at 100m to hold the inside line against the Kilbarchan runner eventually handing over to Cameron Wilson in joint first. Cameron who despite being only an under 17 athlete put up a tremendous fight to hand the baton to Evan Cornforth in third place having been overtaken by the Edinburgh runner. Evan ran very strongly opening the gap on the fourth place team from Inverclyde. The last leg was run by Cameron Mackie who ran impressively to close the gap on the Edinburgh runner, finishing in the Bronze medal position.

The 4x100m team now had something to live up to and did not disappoint. The lead off man was a new comer to the sprint squad from Ayr Seaforth, Fraser Angus who although being an under 17 athlete ran a fantastic first leg more than holding his own against older and on paper faster runners. His baton change with Kuda Tapatapa was flawless and Kuda despite being straight off his leg of the 4x400m ran impressively holding second spot down the back straight. On third leg was another new start at the club David Jamieson for whom this was his first ever athletics event, football being his first love and was his first time wearing spikes. Eager not to let the team down David took off a fraction too early but on the command SLOW from Kuda he managed to put the brakes on and get the baton safely within the zone thereafter running a tremendous bend and executing a seamless baton change with anchor man Scott Young. Baton safely in hand Scott took off like a rocket and had to fight all the way to the finish line against the Victoria Park runner to secure the Bronze medal much to the delight of his teammates and coaches. This caps off a fantastic week end of athletics for the club.
