INTER DISTRICTS XC RACES

JONNY DOES KILMARNOCK PROUD IN THE CAPITAL

Hot on the heels of December’s excellent 5th place performance at the West Districts Cross Country Championships at Bellahouston, Under 13 Kilmarnock Harrier athlete Jonny Houson gained the prestigious award of selection for this weekend’s Great Edinburgh Cross Country Meeting.

Being held in the shadow of Arthurs Seat, Jonny was representing the West of Scotland in the Inter District Under 13 Boys Race and as such was competing against athletes from the North and East of the country.

Such is the magnitude of the event, Jonny also found himself racing on the same course as the likes of Mo Farah, Kate Avery, Gemma Steel, Laura Muir and many other world class athletes not only from the UK, but from around the world in the live televised event.

Showing no signs of nerves whatsoever, Jonny had a stormer in a high class field. Finishing 12th  and conquering the tough 3K course in a time of 11.26 was a fantastic result for the Stewarton runner and more importantly will stand him in great stead as he hopes to progress his running over the coming years.

This coming Saturday (16th) is the date of another excellent event that runners should consider taking part in.

The East Kilbride Open Cross Country Races takes place at Jackton, and there are races throughout the age groups.

The Under 11 Girls Race kicks off proceedings at 12.30pm over 1K, and the day concludes with the Senior Men taking on 8.4K at 2.20pm with a further 8 races in between. The Senior Races are also the next instalments in the Senior Winter Championship, and with not much separating a number of athletes in that, there are precious points to be had on the day.
