Harrier results from Roon The Toon, Bella, VOL, and Stacie medalling in the British Steeplechase Champs

ROON THE TOON ATTRACTS DOZENS OF HOME ATHLETES

A measure of the success of last week’s Roon The Toon 10k, was not only the many months of organisation involved, the manpower from the Club from the early hours in the morning, the fact that over 1,200 finishers makes the event one of the most participated sporting events in the Country, or even all the excellent feedback from all concerned, but the fact that there were also over 80 athletes from the host Club competing the course means that fitness and health in the area is as on the up as it has been in a long while and that is arguably the most important thing of all.

Amongst this number Richard Mair was to be first male finisher from the Club, his 4th place overall finish being no small feat considering that the race was doubling up as the West District Championships and thus attracted an excellent calibre of athlete. Craig Ferguson was to be next home and well inside the top 20, while Jim Connelly completed the first trio of Men Kilmarnock finishers in another excellent run in windy conditions.

Laura Haggarty was first Female Harrier to complete the 6.2 miles while a couple of the younger athletes, Alanis Brydon and Claire Orr, were not only next home, but finished the top 2 Juniors overall on the day to do themselves proud. There were also a few personal bests on the day and full Harrier results were (chip times)

Almost a week later, on Friday 16th June, the next Kilmarnock Harriers Summer Championship race took place at Bellahouston, and in the Brian Goodwin 2 lap 10k course it was Olympian Calum Hawkins who led the way in a new course record and just over 29 minutes, this after a 13 mile session in the morning with a few miles under 5 minute mile pace. Also breaking the old course record was US based Giffnock athlete Luke Traynor in sub 29.30, however gaining valuable championship points were a number of Harriers. First male home for the Club was Connell Drummond, while it was Amanda Bryden who took maximum 15 points on offer in the Women’s stakes.

Finally, US based athlete Stacie Taylor was competing in the British Under 23 3000 metres Steeplechase metre Championships over the weekend, where she was representing Kilmarnock Harriers.

The talented athlete had an excellent run to finish in 10.16, but more importantly claimed a deserved bronze medal in another fantastic run from her.
