GREAT SCOTTISH RUN AND GEORGE CUMMINGS RELAYS RESULTS

THOUSANDS TAKE TO THE STREETS OF GLASGOW

Amongst thousands of athletes taking part in the nation’s largest running event at the weekend were a number of Kilmarnock Harriers who had taken the short hop up the M77 and although the first sign of winter temperatures awaited everyone, by race time conditions were perfect for distance running as they set off for a mid morning start, each with their own individual goals.

First up was the 10k which, like the later Half Marathon, set off in George Square and took in numerous landmarks around the city before finishing in Glasgow Green.

Crossing the line first as far as Kilmarnock was concerned was Stewart McAllister, who clocked yet another sub 40 minute 10k to cement his consistency throughout 2016, while Stephanie Hewitt was first female in a hugely impressive time in a big step up in distance for her.

Full 10k times for the Harriers were –

156th Stewart McAllister 39.49, 308th Stephanie Hewitt 42.28, 460th Alan Buchanan 44.16, 547th Willie Duffy 45.03, 656th Calum Haswell 45.50, 738th Kenneth Dudgeon 46.24, 843rd Ross Haswell 46.59, 1470th Geoff Robertson 50.18, 2404th Kenny Neilson 54.00, 3173rd Emma McGregor 56.47, 3809th Holly McDowell 58.45, 5508th Dawn-Marie Wylie 65.11.

First male for the club was Scott Martin, while fast improving Viv Lambert was the quickest Harrier on the day in a very impressive time.

Again, in a field of thousands, times and positions for the Club were –

HARRIERS KICK OFF THE RELAY SEASON.

The traditional start to “Relay Season” took place in Houston, Renfrewshire on Saturday as the Kilbarchan hosted George Cummings Race took place over the surroundings of the scenic town.

With each leg consisting an extremely undulating 2.7 miles it is a short and sharp race and each Female Team is made up of 3 members and their male counterparts have a quartet in a quota. Kilmarnock Harriers joined a large number of other Clubs and were in the position that they could field 2 teams in each category.

Special mentions should be made for the trio of Amanda Bryden who was competing in her first Relay for the Club, current President and 30.48 10K athlete in recent years Eddie Tonner who was making his first welcome appearance in a Relay for a number of years, and Murray McDonald in his comeback after some time out in Poland recently and all fared well in their individual goals for the day.

Fastest Male unsurprisingly was Richard Mair who came home in an outstanding 5th position after leg one, while another relative newcomer in Stephanie Hewitt was fastest Killie girl.

In a race where the fastest overall time on the day in a new course record by 9th place Olympic Marathon athlete Calum Hawkins (12.08), Kilmarnock Harriers times on the day were –

Mens Team A – Richard Mair 13.47 Scott Martin 15.07 Gordon Reid 15.19 Scott Lyden 16.24

Finally, Stephen McNeil recently took on a massive challenge as he took part in the Loch Ness Marathon.

This was Stephen’s debut over 26.2 miles having mainly competed in shorter track events as a youngster, but in clocking 4.12.51this was hugely respectable as he ticked the distance off of his bucket list and was rightly satisfied with his efforts.
