Glasgow University 5 Mile Road Race 2014

On 29th November, Tony Rodden, John Parker and Myself (Connell Drummond) ventured up to Garscube Glasgow for the Glasgow University 5 Mile Road Race. For John and Myself it was our 1st time at this race but Tony had more experience of this undulating race.

The race consist of 2 laps, the second slightly longer than the 1st as the Start/Finish were split. The 1st loop started straight in to an uphill and then a downhill round the corner onto a straight. The next stage was the second hill which was sharper (up round a corner) but the downhill was a gradual/fast downhill back into the park and through the finish line onto the second lap. Someone was shouting lap times here and I (for a second) thought I was in for a huge pb if I kept the head together. However, this time meant nothing as the Start line was arond 90 seconds (for me) down the road. Passing the start line over 15 minutes, I now confirmed that a PB was out the question.

Now on to the 2nd loop, I at least managed to pick off a few people and although I was blowing out my backside, I felt like trying to maintain the pace rather than giving in to what the rest of my body thought. I finished with a 29:40 finish. It’s not hugely faster than my 10K pace but I still felt it was a good run on this course.

Tony came in just 1 minute behind me. This was his 1st race since going sub 3 at Dublin Marathon and was a brilliant time based on his recent lack of miles and speed in his legs. Former Kilmarnock runner, Alison Simpson was heading to the finish line, but to her dismay, got pipped to the post by John Parker who came in 3 seconds faster than Alison with a time of 32:33. All the Kilmarnock runners although, not at their peak, left the race happy with the run and satisfied with their times over this challenging course.
