EAST KILBRIDE OPEN CROSS COUNTRY 2016

FUN IN THE SNOW AT THE EAST KILBRIDE CROSS COUNTRY RACES
On Saturday afternoon, Jackton on the outskirts of East Kilbride played host to the towns local Athletics Club’s Open Cross Country Races.
A number of events took place, and with a large number of Junior athletes making sure the already testing course was as tough as it could get given the previous 24 hours heavy snow, 6 Kilmarnock Harriers were in the field of over 50 hardened runners for the Senior Races which brought the curtain down on the day.
The Ladies took on 3 laps of the rutted farmers field, and it was nip and tuck between Killie Clubmates Kirsteen Salisbury and Paula Wilson for the first lap. As the race progressed however, it was the former who took the honours to finish in an excellent 8th place, with Paula happy to get another tough race under her belt as she increases her fitness levels after a spell of injury.
In the Men’s race which consisted of 4 laps, eventual winner Robert Gilroy had clear daylight between himself and the rest of the field as the classy Cambuslang athlete racked up yet another race win.
Behind him however, the 4 Harriers all ran well with inform Ross Connelly having arguably Kilmarnock performance of the day.
Ross finished in 4th position overall and with a number of very decent athletes behind him he too can be very satisfied with his race.
Full times and positions were –
Senior Ladies – 8th Kirsteen Salisbury 29.10, 11th Paula Wilson 30.11
Senior Men – 4th Ross Connelly 29.29, 27th Stewart McAllister 35.30, 31st Les McDerment 36.14, 34th David Rutherford 37.18
With a massive thanks to East Kilbride AC for the organisation, the next race in the Club Championship is at Falkirk on Saturday 27th Feb, and anyone wishing to run should be aware that the deadline for entries are on Feb 10th.
Current Championship leaders are Paula Wilson and Ross Connelly.
This Sunday (24th Feb) is the day of the highly popular Scottish Veteran Road Relays. A large number of teams from Kilmarnock will be competing in the Strathclyde Park event, and anyone running on the day should see the Captains for all team info.
