JUNIOR ATHLETES OUT IN FORCE AT LASSWADE CROSS COUNTRY

(report by Lesleyanne Allen)

Sunday 1st November saw Lasswade Athletics host their 34th annual cross country event, and 16 of Kilmarnock Harriers & AC young athletes and parents travelled over to compete in the autumnal sunshine.

In the Under 11 Girls 1 mile race, Lottie Lambert was first home for Kilmarnock in 16th place with a time of 6min 57 seconds, quickly followed by Sophie Ross 22nd, Isla Raeburn 25th, Anna Lambert 29th and Holly Hopkins 33rd.

Next up were the U11 Boys, and the 1 mile results were Lewis Hill 7th in 6mins 15sec, with Brodie McGregor 16th and just 6 seconds behind Lewis. Connor McGowan 38th, Jacob Duncan 43rd, Luke Baird 45th, Lyle Hill 53rd, and Mason Duncan 58th were the other Kilmarnock results.

The U13 Girls 2 mile race saw Ava Heron 29th in 14mins 35sec, quickly followed by Laura Jedrusiak 33rd and Victoria McDowall 35th, with only 17seconds separating the 3 girls.

In the U17/20 Womans race Kilmarnocks only competitor Shona McBean finished 15th in the 3 mile race with a time of 24min 34 sec.

The overall team standings were –

U11 Girls 5th, U11 Boys 5th and U13 Girls 8th.

The young athletes showed great spirit, with some of them competing in a cross country for the first time.
The next cross country for these young athletes will be the Kilmarnock Cross Country Festival on Sunday 22nd November 2015 at the Ayrshire Athletics Arena, Queens Drive, Kilmarnock. There will be 9 races from Under 11 to Seniors/ Vets, and if interested in taking part please contact Kilmarnock Harriers for details. You don’t have to be part of any athletics club to enter.

Finally, on the same day Harriers Leslie McDerment and Connell Drummond ventured to the East Coast to take part in the Mens Only 10K Road Race.
On a scenic and undulating course both men ran well with Les showing he was getting back into decent form with a clocking of 41.20 which was good enough to bag him a top 10 position in his competitive age group.
Taking advantage of a quick first half of the race, Connell Drummond went through 5k in a nippy 16.51 and although the hilly second half slowed him down slightly he was pleased with a time of 35.40 which was a mere 16 seconds outside of his lifetime best, and good enough for 19th place overall in a large field.
