Dundonald and Dunoon………..

RICHARD CONTINUES TO IMPRESS AT DUNDONALD

Last Wednesday (3rd August), Dundonald hosted their longstanding and extremely popular 10k Road Race and as ever there was a large contingent of Kilmarnock Harriers in the field which doubled up as the latest race in the Club Summer Championships.

Tucking in a bit behind the leaders from the gun, new member Richard Mair took the lead in the long climb up to Symington towards the halfway point and as the race progressed this was a lead that was never under serious threat as he pulled away from the field. While Richard has been improving on a weekly basis and was one of the favourites for the race, as he crossed the finish line he had clocked a superb time of 33.47 to demolish his previous best over 6.2 miles by well over a minute. With his old 10k best having been set over the relatively flat Troon 10k course in May and Dundonald being one of the more challenging races on the circuit, this was no mean feat, and there is no reason why this can’t be up for further review in the next few races.

Next Kilmarnock Harrier was Connell Drummond with Jim Connelly just behind, while first Kilmarnock woman to cross the line and continue her great form over the past couple of years was Rhona O’Neill. Rhona was followed home by Kate Todd while in arguably performance of the night the evergreen Hugh Rankin wasn’t too far behind and had many an athlete in his wake in a fantastic display of running.

On Saturday, Connell Drummond was in Dunoon as he fine tunes his prep in advance of next month’s Moray Marathon.

Running in the Half Marathon, Connell clocked 1.19.18 for an excellent 7th place overall finish and can be happy with yet another fine run.

Next up for a number of athletes is next Wednesdays (August 17th) Irvine AC’s Jim Young Marymass 10k, and again this is in the Harriers Summer Championships. As such this should see a number of Harriers in the field, and entry is now open via Entry Central.
