Christmas Handicap

Large Turnout for Christmas Handicap

In the last big Kilmarnock Harriers training night before the close of the Arena for Christmas, the annual Christmas Handicap took place over a brand spanking new route. Organiser’s Ian Gebbie and Hugh Rankin had designed a route near to the Athletics Arena in order to encourage participation and this strategy worked as the 5k run saw a massive 56 runners take part.

A two lap course measuring almost bang on 5k exactly saw the runners loop up and down Hurlford Road and perfect conditions and a flat course saw some fine performances. First to set off were new members Christine McShane and Caroline Brown, while inform and also new Member Graham Cameron was to be back marker and gave away 13 ½ minutes on the first people away.

Graham’s handicap proved to be in no way harsh as he scythed through the field to clock an impressive 16.22 to be easily fastest on the night and pushed him into a Top 10 position in the first past the post stakes.

However, Angus Kerr took the honours and arguably performance of the night as the youngster finished first past the post in a great time of 20.14 scratch which put him 12th fastest overall on the night – a fine result. First female past the post in another good effort was Bronagh Wishart in a time of 23.08 scratch which placed her 5th fastest female.

Fastest female, despite a fall was Kara Tait who clocked 18.52 and 7th fastes runner overall so she can be happy with her nights effort.
