The club would like to mark this occasion by having a wee run in his honour, after which we will be making a presentation to him.

Having been a World and European record holder, Hugh is one of Kilmarnock Harriers most successful athletes. He has also been one of the clubs greatest servants, supporting us in numerous ways over many years. We do hope as many as possible of you will be able to join us to pay tribute to this fine man.

Due to the disruption caused by the Pantomime and the difficulties in fitting in the various Christmas Handicaps, for this year only, the run will also incorporate the Seniors (U17 and above) Christmas Handicap. To participate in the Secret Santa Draw, can Seniors and U20 bring a wrapped secret Santa gift to the approximate value of £5.

The run will start at 9.45 on Sunday 15th December and will take place over the Parkrun course (a measured 5K) in Dean Castle Country Park. It will be a sealed handicap, i.e. a mass start with handicaps adjusted after the finish. Please register between 9.15 and 9.30. After the run we will head for the Café for coffee and cakes on the club. Non runners are welcome to participate as volunteers or spectators. Although the handicap is for Seniors, juniors are also welcome

To help the café, we need an idea of numbers. Can folk wishing to attend please let me know here – Ian Gebbie or on Facebook. If you are running, please provide a recent 5K time. If not let me know if you would be able to marshal.

<post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">13383</post-id>

West District Relays 5th October – Help Required

igebbie

Cross Country

Featured Events

Volunteers

On Saturday 5th October we are hosting the West District Cross Country Relays. To ensure everyone finishes in good light we plan to get the first runner off no later than 6.30. I will issue the handicaps in advance with your start time. Please arrive in plenty time to collect your number and warm up. If you cannot make your allocated start come anyway and we will sort it out once everyone is finished.

Being an individual handicap event everyone has a chance, so do come along and give it a try.

If you have never run the race before, it is a pleasurable 4+ miles over a gently undulating course (lol)!! If you have run it, then ignore that and remember the fast downhill section and the complementary beer and buffet at the end!

If you intend to run, or are available to help let me know at Ian Gebbie (or via Facebook) with a current 5 or 10K time and you’ll be assured of a well considered handicap taking all available evidence into account. Bill was one of the club stalwarts for many years as an athlete, committee member and volunteer helper. Although he came late to running, joining us when he was 51, he squeezed in a lot of miles into his time with the club. A great record keeper, Bill calculated that he had done 32000 miles by his 80th birthday. In doing so he became the Scottish over-60s marathon champ at Lochaber in 1994 and the British over-70s half marathon silver medallist in 2001. I remember he celebrated his 80th birthday by doing a wee 18 miler Sunday run.

Undoubtedly the highlight of Bill’s running career was competing in the veteran’s world championships in Bruges, Belgium, in 1996, along with great friend and running buddy, Hugh Rankin, and legendary Olympian Emil Zatopek.

His funeral will be held on Thursday 20th June at 1.15pm at Kilmarnock Independent Funeral Directors Church Street Kilmarnock KA3 1AA. Then on to Grassyards cemetery then to the Dean Suite at the Park Hotel to which all Harriers who knew Bill are most welcome, to celebrate his life.

Ian Gebbie

<post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">13137</post-id>

Monday Junior Christmas Handicap Results

igebbie

Featured Events

News & Results

Results of tonights Junior Christmas Handicap are here – Christmas Handicap Monday Junior 2023 Results

Results of tonights Junior Christmas Handicap are here – Christmas Handicap Monday Junior 2023 Results

<post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">12974</post-id>

Jog Squad Christmas Handicap Results

igebbie

News & Results

Road Running

Results of tonights Jog Squad Christmas Handicap are here – Results Race report to follow.

Results of tonights Jog Squad Christmas Handicap are here – Results

Race report to follow.

<post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">12960</post-id>

Last Call for Seniors Christmas Handicap

igebbie

Featured Events

Road Running

Hi Folks, if you fancy participating on the club seniors (plus U17 and above) Christmas Handicaps on Wednesday (KH Jog Squad) or Thursday and haven’t already signed up, then complete the form here ENTER HERE or post in Facebook.
