Virgin London Marathon 2016

On Sunday, tens of thousands of runners took to the streets of London to take part in one of the highlights in the calendar – The Marathon.

On a day where the Men’s race saw the overall winner come within 7 seconds of a new World Record by running just over 2 hours and 3 minutes, and the battle for Olympic selection amongst the GB athletes at fever pitch (with the first 3 male Brits being Kilbarchan brothers Calum and Derek Hawkins, and Shettleston’s Tewelde), there were 2 Kilmarnock athletes in the world class field.

First home, and in another shiny new personal best was Connell Drummond who was starting from a Championship Start for the first time.

Connell took over 2 minutes off of the time that was set in Lyon last year by running 2.41.13 and a placing of 353rd overall.

Next up was John McClarty who has been making a bit of a comeback recently. John completed the gruelling 26.2 miles in a bit over 4 hours so well done to him. Special mentions also to John Parker and Mark Alexander with both Harriers unfortunately withdrawing due to injury, but showing the camaraderie of the Club by taking the trip down with their wives and lending much appreciated support to the athletes.
