March kicks off in Magnificent style for a number of Seniors.

KARA DOES HER COUNTY PROUD

In form Kilmarnock Harrier was in Birmingham at the weekend representing the West of Scotland in the UK Inter-counties Cross Country Championships.

Having gained selection due to her performances at the Scottish National and West Districts Championships in recent months, the Kilmaurs athlete was in great form as she lined up against some of the UK’s top athletes. With a decent placing of 146th in 2013 Kara was hoping to improve on this and was certainly in condition to do so, and when all was said and done at the finishing line Kara was more than pleased with yet another excellent result.

Finishing 52nd out of 270 top runners representing their individual Counties, Kara was also not only 2nd top performer for the West Districts but also 6th Scottish athlete on the day to finish her Cross Country season off on a massive high.

Huge congratulations to her, and also to everyone at Kilmarnock Harriers for what is always a massive team effort.

Cameron Wilson was in double top form in the past couple of weeks as firstly he joined James Wales in the annual Police Cross Country Championships at Glasgow.

Starting steadily in the 3 lap course by half way he had opened up a gap over multiple race winner Steve Cairns. Cameron’s strength is his forte and by the finishing line he had conquered the tough course and all opposition with clear daylight over his rivals, with huge mentions to Men’s Captain James Wales who finished agonisingly outside the medals in a fine 4th place to complete a fine day for the Club and themselves.

On Saturday, Cameron all but sowed up a very tight Club Winter Championship when he took a trip to Glasgow for the Jack Crawford Springburn Cup 10K Road Race.

Coming home 2nd overall, Cameron also showed his consistency by following up his 33.32 clocking on Boxing Day with a fine 33.53 on a tougher course in not ideal conditions.

Runner/Cyclist Neil Walker is not totally out the Winter Championship Race however, and on Saturday he took part in the UK’s biggest Duathlon. Finishing an outstanding 7th in his age category, Neil completed a 10k (36.30) and 5k (18.30) either side of a tough bike ride and was rightly pleased with his efforts.

Finally, four Harriers set of for the Balloch to Clydebank Half Marathon on Sunday, 2 with marathons planned in the next few weeks, and one was in Inverness

Tony Rodden ( London) and John Tougher (Manchester) joined Willie Duffy who had plenty recent road miles under his belt. It was Tony who set off well and he was first home in 1.27.33 which was a massive new Pb shaving 8mins off his previous best time. John was next home in 1.29.26 shaving 4 minutes of his previous best while Willie clocked 1.32.58 and was delighted  with his efforts and is now looking forward to a good season. Also in the field was new Harrier Scott Lyden who kept up the days tradition up by clocking 1.28 for yet another huge lifetime best.

Over in Inverness, another lifetime Half Marathon was smashed as Steven Milligan ran 1.26.11 in the City’s popular race.

With so many improvements at this time of year, a promising 2014 surely lies ahead for a number of local athletes.
