National Cross Country Relays 2013

LAST OF THE RELAYS TAKES PLACE AT THE NATIONALS

After the success of last week’s Ayrshire Cross Country Relay Championships, and the previous week’s West Districts, a busy spell concluded for Kilmarnock Harriers on Saturday 26th October as Captains Kara and James were able to field a number of athletes for the National Champs at Cumbernauld.

Following on from the Junior Races, the older athletes took on 4,000 metres of what is generally recognised as the toughest course, and one of the hardest in the full calendar.

Man of the moment, in form Graham Cameron took on the first leg and had his now customary stormer. Graham finished the leg and handed over to Cameron Wilson, leaving Kilmarnock in a superb 6th place and one of its highest positions at this stage in a number of years.

Cammy, Roger Naughton and Neil Walker all followed this up and at the end of proceedings the team had finished in 16th position – an excellent result and more strides for the Harriers.

The second string consisting of Scott Martin, James Wales, Stuart Ferguson and Connell Drummond once more showed the strength in depth and came home in the top half, and second Ayrshire Team on the day.

An incomplete 3rd Team was also on show, and it was good to see all athletes(Murray McDonald, David McLeod and Willie Duffy) all set course bests and all will benefit from these Relays in the months ahead.

Full times were –

Mens A (16th place) – Graham Cameron 12.28, Cameron Wilson 13.38, Roger Naughton 13.57, Neil Walker 14.22

Mens B – (48th place) -Scott Martin 14.10, James Wales 14.36, Stewart Ferguson 14.41, Connell Drummond 16.06

Mens C – Murray McDonald 16.47, David McCleod 15.30, Willie Duffy 17.18.

Kara Tait had previously led off the Ladies Team, and like Graham had left the Killie chicks in a top 10 position at the end of her run.

Handing over to her sister which is now the norm, Colleen and Paula Wilson brought the trio home in fine shape and a good overall position.

Full times were –

Killie A ( 18th place )Kara Tait 15.14, Colleen Tait 16.24, Paula Wilson 17.44

Special mentions go to the on course support crew of Natalie Boyce, Senior Coach Jim Young and others who certainly helped all athletes on the day.
