Round Arran Road Relays 2013

Trophy Returns to Killie after 15 year gap

Saturday 20th July was a day when Kilmarnock Harriers took the usual trip across the water to compete in the Round Arran Road Relays – an event which the Club has competed in for decades.

9 Members took part this year, and this meant that we fielded 2 teams, with huge thanks to Irvine AC who made up our second team of 6 runners with 3 of their own members who were looking for a run and making a temporary transfer for the day across the county to join us.

On a roasting day fitting with the past few weeks, temperatures were close to 30 degrees and with Arran being anything but flat a very tough workout for all involved was guaranteed. The format of the race see’s each of the half dozen team members take a leg each, with distances varying from 7.5 miles to 11.5 miles, with a few “rolling hills” for all competitors to keep everyone on their toes.

Team debutants John Parker and nephew Graham Cameron were taking part along with experienced campaigners including treasurer Alasdair Murray so it was an excellent mix we had.

On the day the Club fared fantastically well with everyone playing their part, although huge mentions must go to Roger Naughton and Graham Cameron – each winning their individual legs comfortably on the day. When all times were tallied up from all teams, it transpired that Killie had caused a shock on the day by nicking the overall title from Champions from the past few years Central AC, and a check at the trophy saw that this was the first time it would return to the blue half of Ayrshire since 1998. As this was only the second time in the Club’s history we had one the event this was a great result for all of Kilmarnock Harriers.

Provisional times of each Kilmarnock Harrier on the day were –

South Leg 1 (7.5 miles)- 1st place – Graham Cameron 42.48, Murray McDonald 55.20…………………South Leg 2 (9 miles)- 1st place Roger Naughton 53.48, John Parker 63.23………………………South Leg 3 (8.5 miles) – 4th place – Alasdair Murray 55.24, Maire Gorman TBC

North Leg 1 (11.2 miles) – 2nd place- Scott Martin 67.20……………..North Leg 2 (10.5 miles) – 7th place – Connell Drummond 72.06……….North Leg 3 (10 Miles) – 3rd place – Stewart Ferguson 62.02.

Well done to all, and special thanks to all the friends, family, and supporters of the Club who took the trip over to offer support.
