Harriers Achieve Top Award

Podium Awards

Podium Awards

Kilmarnock Harriers became one of the first Clubs in the Country to be presented with the Scottishathletics Podium Award, a merit presented for good practice amongst many other things.

The top UK Marathon runner at the moment, Derek Hawkins, was down to oversee the handing over of the plaque, while other delegates from East Ayrshire Council and Scotishathletics were also in attendance at the Ayrshire Athletics Arena as Club President Jim Young accepted it on behalf of the Club.

In the President’s own words, this award is another Marker of success in our club’s journey to become the best it can be, and reflects our achievement in having the appropriate club structure and work plans to make athletics available and affordable to all within our community.

Kilmarnock Harriers are committed through Scottish Athletics CLUB TOGETHER initiative to foster growth by increasing participation at all levels and creating a nurturing environment so that everyone feels included, whatever their level or indeed ambition.

Our management committee and coaching structures are strong, robust, and, propelled by this magnificent facility our club is showing the benefit of such an ARENA with many of our young athletes medalling at district and national levels.

My thanks to everyone in the club in helping achieve this PODIUM STATUS, especially to all the volunteers who freely give of their time on Tuesdays/Thursdays and at week – ends to allow all our athletes to follow their dreams. Thanks also to our other partners who are with us on this  journey  – SCOTTISH ATHLETICS  with its numerous initiatives and coach development programmes E.A.C. having the foresight and will to deliver this multi-million Pound facility and to our award winning partnership with E.A. leisure who work with us to develop links and pathways to encourage athletics in our schools.

Our club is in its’ 126th year with a great history behind us but the best is yet to come.

The presentation finished with a question and answer session with Derek Hawkins, where amongst other things he disclosed that one of his favourite training sessions was short, sharp repetitions of 5 times 400 metres with long recoveries. Interesting stuff indeed from the 2 hours and 14 minutes man over 26.2 miles.
