It feels like absolutely no time since we last reported, but there has been a LOT going on in
the last couple of weeks – this has turned into a bit of a monster report! Great to see so
many good things going on for our athletes, but please let us know if we’ve missed anything
– we love to report good news!
Our first two races this week were both held on Glasgow Green – first up was the February
edition of 3k on The Green on Friday the 28 th , where Adam Todd finished 12 th overall in a fine
10:23 – great running Adam.
Next on the agenda on Saturday the 1 st of March was what is becoming a firm club favourite
– the Allan Scally Relays. This event has got bigger and bigger over the years, and over
300 teams competed on the day from across Scotland and indeed beyond! We had ten full
teams originally entered, a couple of late drop outs due to illness or injury meant we fielded a
total of 37 runners on the day which was great to see! Our first team to have all runners
across the line was our men’s A team consisting of Jonathon Downey (15:09), Jordan
Phillips (16:30), Jamie Work (16:27) and Owen Walpole (16:39), finishing in 18 th place overall
(17 th senior men’s team). Next back in 46 th overall were the men’s B team of Scott Masterton
(17:02), Graeme Quinn (16:40 – believe to be a PB), Tom Flood (17:11) and Jamie Nix
(18:50). Our men’s V40 team completed in 63 rd overall (6 th MV40 team) and consisted of
John Speirs (17:09), Mark Alexander (17:51), Ross Granger (17:35) and David Anderson
(19:24). Next to complete were our ladies V40 team who were 95 th overall, and also took the
WV40 prize by over 6 minutes in total – great to see the club win prizes at this event! Laura
Haggarty took the team out in 17:57, backed up by Jennifer Beattie (20:06), Lynsey
O’Connor (19:06) and Kat Kelly (19:14). The ladies took up 4 of the top 10 fastest V40 times
on the day as well – go girls! Next back in for the club in 135 th oveall were the Men’s C team
of Ross McNaught (19:01), Mike Corson (21:15), Gary Martin (20:39) and Nick Carter
(20:22). Our senior ladies A were next back in 138 th overall (16 th senior ladies team) with
Lorna Baird leading the charge in 18:30, followed by Eilidh Ballantyne (20:50), Izzy Caufield
(21:00) and Morgan McBurnie (21:04). The ladies B team were next to complete in 170 th
overall (28 th senior ladies team) with Eve Starritt taking the team out with a PB (20:48),
followed by Bethany Ross who also PBd in 20:59, Amanda Bryden (22:20) and Sophie
Granger in 21:06 (also a PB!). The ladies C team of Lynsey Jamieson (21:16 and a fine
PB!), Debbie Love (21:54 and another PB to add to the list!), Charlotte Gebbie (23:46) and
Gillian Wishart (24:50) finished in 214 th overall (33 rd senior ladies team), and the ladies D
team of Jackie Duncan (26:04), Amy Alexander (26:25), Lauren Carter (24:44) and Hannah
Connell (31:28) were 254 th overall (49 th senior ladies team) Our solo runner Alasdair Murray
had a fine run of 22:32 on the first leg – sorry we couldn’t get you some teammates at the
last minute Al! A great day was had by all, and it was great to see so many different training
groups mixing together and cheering each other on – the athletes from Campbeltown also
extend their thanks for everyone’s hospitality! Let’s see if we can get even more teams next
year!
Some of our U20 athletes were also in action this weekend at the Emirates for the Scottish
National U20 Championships on Sunday the 2 nd of March. Laura Mitchell finished 10 th in her
high jump with a 1.42m jump, meanwhile at the throwing circle Logan Mitchell asserted his
dominance taking the gold in the Shot with 13.98m. Younger brother Rhian was also in
attendance, getting some experience with the heavier U20 weight despite still being an U17
athlete. It definitely seems that the weight will not be a problem, with Rhian throwing 12.44m
to take the bronze medal – great day for the family!
Also on the 2 nd , some of our athletes were at Culzean Castle to take part in the Wild Deer
Trail events. In the 10k event, Victoria Martin finished in 218 th place in 1:14:21 – well done
Victoria! Meanwhile in the Half Marathon Craig Ferguson emerged victorious, completing
the tricky course in an excellent 1:25:20 for the win. Robin Bourne also took part, finishing in
149 th place in 2:49:30 – well done all, looked a tricky course!
Moving on to the weekend just gone, we had athletes in all directions doing a multitude of
events. Closest to home perhaps were the track and field athletes who were at the Scottish
National Senior indoor champs at the Emirates. In the field events, our very own Scottish
U20 Shot Putt Champion Logan Mitchell stepped up to compete with the senior athletes (and
a heavier weight!). Logan finished a very good 4 th place behind some strong athletes with a
throw of 12.98m – exciting times ahead for this athlete as he prepares to move into the
senior ranks. We also had Brooke Dunlop in action in the long jump, with a best effort on the
day of 5.35m good enough for 8 th overall – well done Brooke! On the round track, two of our
Masters athletes were mixing it up with the youngsters in the 800m. In the heats, Jennifer
Beattie ran 2:29.22 but did not progress to the final. However, Laura Haggarty took the win
in her heat (2:19.76) and then backed this up with a fantastic PB of 2:17.07 in the final to
take the Senior Bronze medal – huge congratulations to Laura and her coaches!
Also in Glasgow, we had 3 athletes at the Cambuslang Harriers Down by The River 10k
race. First home in a new PB was Jordan Phillips who was 7 th overall and 1 st U20 in 34:03 –
great running Jordan! Next back in 32 nd place was Ross Granger (37:12), and wife Sophie
Granger finished with a shiny new PB of 43:41 in 93 rd place overall – great running all!
A bit across town, John Speirs made his first official V50 race a winning one, completing the
Jack Crawford 10k in 35:08 for a 9 th place overall and 1 st V50 finish – well done John.
A little further from home, Sunday also saw the Inverness Half marathon take place. First
Harrier home was Lorna Baird with a new PB of 1:25:19 for 189 th place overall (22 nd lady) –
great running Lorna and a serious warning shot for the rest of the season! Also competing
as a Harrier, Jade Davis posted a 1:54:55 for 1109 th overall – well done Jade.
Looking forward, a number of our summer league events that we announced a couple of
weeks ago have now been released and some have sold out already – watch out for a full
formal announcement on the summer league rules later this week!
