Senior Roundup 28th July 2022

As we get towards the end of August, the results continue to roll in for our U20/senior athletes at a
wide range of events!

Earlier in the month we reported that a team of our Masters track and field athletes were heading to
Dundee to compete in the 4J Studios Scottish Athletics Masters Championships at Dundee, and on
Saturday the 5 th a team of 5 athletes headed up the road to compete for the championship medals
on offer. First up was Douglas Dickson who had a great run in the 100m to claim V55 gold, and this
was quickly followed up by golds in the V35 and V40 ladies 800m race by Laura Haggarty and
Jennifer Beattie. All of the ladies age groups ran together, and it was an outright win for Laura in
2:24.83. Next up was David Sherrington who ran a great race in the men’s V40 800m for 4 th in a very
strong field at his first outdoor championship event. The ladies were then back in action for the
400m, and despite the wind getting up a bit it was gold again for Laura and Jennifer, with Laura once
again winning the race outright. However, the star of the show was undoubtedly Alex McIntosh who
took home no fewer than 4 medals – golds in the hammer, javelin and shot and a bronze in the
discus in his age category. All in a very successful day for the club and a strong representation.
At the same venue, some of our U20 athletes were also competing in the Scottish Heptathlon
Championships. Despite scorching temperatures across the two days, both Brooke Dunlop and Isla
Raeburn had some fantastic performances, and after all was tallied up at the end of day 2 it was
Brooke who took the gold medal with a total score of 4363. Isla finished an excellent 5 th overall with
a total score of 3638 – well done to both ladies!

On the same weekend, senior coach Colin Glencorse took part in the Dollar Hill Race – a 15k hill race
with a climb of 960m. Colin finished in an excellent 17 th place overall and 4 th V40 – well done Colin.
Back on the hills on Wednesday the 13 th , 5 Harriers took on the Cairn Table hill race. Jonathon
Downey was 1 st Harrier home in 5 th overall and 1 st U20, Colin Anderson was 35 th , Michael Corson was
45 th overall and 2 nd V60, Roddie Pugh was 46 th overall and 1 st V65 and Robin Bourne was 88 th . Great
running guys in what looked like pretty damp/humid conditions!

The weekend of the 15 th -17 th of July saw the return of the Run The Blades at Whitelees Windfarm.
On the Friday night we had 3 Harriers complete the tough 10k route, with Steven Vass first home in
54:56, followed by Corrie Lotter in 55:35 and Catriona Hastings in 1:02:54. Saturday was the
gruelling 50km ultra, and Ken Monaghan once again completed this event in warm conditions in
6:07:46. Ken is more usually seen officiating at events (for which we are very grateful as a club!) and
it’s great to see him get out and have his chance to compete. Stewart McRoberts made a very last
minute decision to take part in the half marathon on the Sunday, and completed in 2:11:01. Well
done to all athletes who took on this event – that hill near the end is not for the faint hearted.

On Thursday the 21 st of July we were kindly invited by Garscube Harriers to participate in their
Charlie Kilshaw 5 mile Memorial Race. 7 athletes participated in the senior race as well as 2 athletes
in the Junior event (well done to Jamie Work and Lewis Anderson who were 3 rd and 4 th respectively).
First home for the Harriers was David Anderson in 33:56, followed by Connor Shields in 34:41, Ellie
Anderson in 35:27, Nick Carter in 35:58, Melissa Anderson in 37:10, Russell Duncan in 37:53 and
Mark Lyden in 40:03. Ellie also won the prize for the first placed U17 female guest runner – well
done Ellie!

Friday the 22 nd saw a return to track racing – following the unfortunate cancellation of the Open
Graded at Kilmarnock due to a lack of graded officials, some of our athletes diverted to Livingston to
get a race. Ally Mitchell was quickest of our 200m runners with 3 rd place in 23.07 in heat 1, and
Jamie Nix was 4 th in his heat in 26.99. Jamie then also ran the 800m in pretty unpleasant conditions
for 2:16.41.

A little bit further from home, current ladies summer points leader Kirsty Mackay took part in the
San Francisco 10k. She tells me that it ‘just happened’ that the race was on when she was there, if
you’re going to do a destination race do it right though Kirsty!

Wrapping up this set of races, Wednesday the 27 th saw the 7 th race in our Summer Points series take
place. Kilmaurs 5k is always a popular race and this time around was no different with entries
getting close to capacity and 294 athletes completing this event. Of those 294, 33 of them were
representing Kilmarnock Harriers and it was great to see so many blue and white vests. There were
a number of PBs achieved on the night, full results are available here. It is impossible to mention
everyone, but special mentions must go to Martin Brown who was 3 rd overall in a PB of 15:18, with
Craig Ferguson finishing 4 th overall in 15:57 which I also believe is a PB. Lynsey O’Connor was 1 st lady
home in a PB of 18:38 taking the V40 prize. Other age group prize winners were the super
consistent Michael Corson for the V60 category and special mentions to our junior athletes Matthew
Monachello and Lewis Anderson who won the M15-M17 and M11-M14 categories respectively –
great to see so much young talent coming up through the age groups! The men’s team of Martin,
Craig, David Sherrington and Jamie Nix won the men’s team prize, and the ladies team of Lynsey,
Ellie Anderson and Sharon McNicol retained the ladies team title for another year. Huge well done
to everyone who put their toe on the line!

Next up is Cumbrae 10 mile race on Sunday, followed by Dundonald 10k on Wednesday the 3 rd of
August with more points up for grabs. From a points league perspective, Mark Lyden still leads the
men’s table with 61 points but Paul Black is snapping at his heels with 57 and Martin Brown now
moves up to 3 rd with 50 points. On the ladies table Kirsty Mackay extends her lead to 82 points, with
her nearest competitor Lorna Baird on 50 points. Hot on her heels are Sasha I’Anson and Louise
Baillie both on 46 points. However, there is still all to play for with at least 8 more events to be
considered. Attention will soon turn to Club Championships on the 4 th of September – look out for
practice sessions for the field events being announced on social media soon.

Here are the current tables – summer points league (3)
